New Delhi: Gopal Rai, the AAP's city convener, announced on Thursday that the party would launch a signature drive from December 1 to December 20 to gather opinions on whether Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, should step down in the event that he is detained on suspicion of "conspiracy by the BJP."
Speaking at a press conference alongside party MP Raghav Chadha, Rai claimed that in an attempt to destroy the Aam Aadmi Party, the BJP has planned a plot to have Kejriwal arrested in connection with the "fake" liquor scam case.
AAP workers will distribute leaflets as part of the "Mai Bhi Kejriwal" campaign on Friday to obtain signatures at each of the 2,600 voting places located throughout the city. The pamphlets will ask voters if they believe Kejriwal should resign as chief minister of Delhi in the event that he is jailed.
According to Rai, Kejriwal met with AAP MLAs and council members to get their thoughts on the matter, and everyone agreed that he shouldn't step down and run the government from behind bars.
The AAP, he said, would host "Jan Samvad" in each ward of the city from December 21 to December 24 to talk to people about the alleged liquor fraud and "the BJP's conspiracy to get Kejriwal arrested and seek their opinion if he should resign as Delhi chief minister if arrested," Rai continued.
Kejriwal was called by the Enforcement Directorate earlier this month to be questioned in connection with a money laundering case involving the purported excise policy fraud. Kejriwal declined to appear before the ED, arguing that it was "illegal and politically motivated," and requested that it revoke its notice instead.
