Days after the Election Commission revealed the seven-phase plan for the Lok Sabha elections, a huge political slugfest broke out. Congressman Rahul Gandhi stirred controversy when he brought up the Hindu goddess "Shakti" in relation to the electronic voting machine (EVM).
Gandhi's statement, which he made on the final day of his "Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra" in Shivaji Park, Mumbai, has caused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party to respond strongly.
The Congress leader's comment has sparked a massive uproar ahead of the first round of elections, which is set to take place in 102 seats across 21 states on April 19. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spearheaded the BJP's attack on him.
What's the dispute about?
The Wayand MP asserted that the soul and integrity of EVMs have been traded to the King (PM Modi) while voicing his concerns about the way the machines are operating to highlight the opposition's fight against the power of the state. In addition, he worshipped the goddess "Shakti," linking it to the BJP government in power and claiming that the opposition is up against the "shakti" (might) of the nation.
In Hinduism, there is a term for "might" called "Shakti." We are engaged in combat with a Shakti, or state power. What that Shakti is and what it means for us is the question at hand. EVMs have sold their soul and integrity to the King (PM Modi). It is a reality that this exists. "Every autonomous institution has traded its spine to the Centre, not just EVMs," he declared.
For Hindus, the term "Shakti" holds great significance since it is linked to the Goddess Durga/Amba. The Congressman's statement sparked a debate right away.
Attack by the BJP:
The ruling BJP quickly took note of the remark and attacked the Congressman for his "anti-Hindu" and "misogynistic" views. Speaking at a rally in Jagtial, Telangana, Prime Minister Modi attacked Gandhi by asserting that every mother and daughter in the nation is a type of "shakti."
