Sonia Gandhi, a first-time member of the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan, was sworn in to take over the seat that would become empty on April 3 following the term of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
This occurred a few days prior to the subsequent Lok Sabha elections, which are set to begin on April 19 and run in seven stages.
In the presence of Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the House Piyush Goyal, she took an oath. In attendance were her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, secretary general P C Mody, and deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha Harivansh.
Sonia Gandhi served as Rae Bareli's representative in the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2019 and from 2009 to 2019. Because of her health, she opted to be elected from the upper house this time.
The historic event took place in the Parliament House hallways, where Dhankhar presided over the sombre ritual of giving the oath to these recently elected Rajya Sabha members.
In an environment of both expectation and dignity, a remarkable group of people stood up to swear allegiance to serving the country honourably and diligently.
Golla Baburao, Meda Raghunadha Reddy, Yerram Venkata Subba Reddy, Sanjay Kumar Jha, Syed Naseer Hussain, and Ajay Makan were among those who took the oath.
