Due to allegations of anti-incumbency against her, incumbent Lok Sabha MP Poonam Mahajan, the daughter of former Union Minister Pramod Mahajan, has been replaced by attorney Ujjwal Nikam, who defended the Mahajan family in the litigation that followed her father's murder.
The 1993 bomb case, the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks case involving Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab, the 2011 triple blasts, the Shakti Mills gangrape charges, and the Kopardi and Ahmednagar rape and murder cases are just a few of the high-profile cases that Nikam handled before becoming well-known. Nikam's contributions to the 1993 explosion and 26/11 assault cases were the main reasons for his notoriety.
Ujjwal Nikam had a connection to the "Biryani Story" of Kasab.
The only terrorist apprehended during the 26/11 attacks, Ajmal Kasab, was hanged by the police during the UPA-2 administration. In the trial of the perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Nikam presided over the prosecution. His first claim that Kasab was given biryani while incarcerated provoked strong criticism of the state government led by the Congress-NCP. But in 2015, Ujjwal Nikam revealed during a worldwide counterterrorism conference in Jaipur that he created this story to offset the increasing emotional backing for Kasab.

Most of the reporters had gathered around Sanjay Dutt when Nikam emerged to address the media. Because of this, Nikam advised Sanjay Dutt to leave the court grounds immediately after he had departed in order to prevent similar circumstances.
