The newly elected independent member of parliament for Maharashtra's Sangli Lok Sabha constituency, Vishal Patil, endorsed the Congress on Thursday.
Patil is the grandson of a former Congress leader and the former chief minister of Maharashtra, Vasantdada Patil. After the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) was given the Sangli seat in the seat-sharing agreement with the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi, he stood as an independent candidate in the Lok Sabha elections.
The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), the Congress, and the Shiv Sena group of former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray make up the majority of the alliance in the state.
Declared on Tuesday, the Maha Vikas Aghadi secured 30 out of 48 seats in Maharashtra, while the Congress managed to secure 13 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. 17 seats were gained by the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Shiv Sena, and the Nationalist Congress Party fraction led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
Patil defeated BJP contender Sanjay Patil by a margin of 1,00,053 votes to win the Sangli seat.
Vishal Patil visited with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi on Thursday, extending his support for the organisation. He also got to know Rahul and Sonia Gandhi, two prominent Congressmen.
Kharge greeted Vishal Patil on social media and declared that Maharashtra has triumphed against the “politics of treachery, arrogance and division.”
