Taking up the themes of criticism they had thrown at the Election Commission in Parliament prior to and after the Lok Sabha elections, the Opposition INDIA group focused on a number of concerns, including electronic voting machines.
While Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, who has 37 Lok Sabha members, declared that he would not trust electronic voting machines "even if I win all 80 seats" in Uttar Pradesh, Manoj Jha of the RJD made reference to the well-liked television show "Panchayat," saying that "even the village head of Phulera in the series has more credibility than the Election Commission."
During the election campaign, the opposition has questioned EVMs, delayed turnout figures, and accused the EC of having "faulty" electoral registers. On results day, CEC Rajiv Kumar referred to the results, which showed the BJP losing its majority and the INDIA alliance making considerable gains, as "a vindication" of the poll panel's "impartiality."
Akhilesh remarked in the Lok Sabha that there were concerns about the EC's behaviour. "The EC and the Government were kind to some people when the model code of conduct was in effect. Our democracy will be robust and seem stronger to the rest of the world if that institution maintains its objectivity, the speaker stated.
"I had no trust in EVMs in the past, I have no trust today as well, and will not have trust even if I win all 80 (Lok Sabha) seats (in UP)," he declared, calling for the removal of EVMs from the electoral process.
