In a major political development in Gujarat, Congress state president Shaktisinh Gohil tendered his resignation following a poor performance by the party in the recent bypolls. The elections were held in two key assembly constituencies—Visavadar in Junagadh and Kadi in Mehsana. Both seats slipped out of Congress' hands, marking a significant setback for the party ahead of future state-level political battles.
Gohil, a senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member, took full moral responsibility for the defeat. Speaking at a press conference, he announced that he had already sent his resignation letter to Congress' national president, Mallikarjun Kharge. “Since the bypoll results were not as per our expectations, I have taken the moral responsibility for my party’s defeat,” he stated. Gohil was appointed to the post in June 2023, just before the 2024 general elections, in hopes of reviving the party’s standing in Gujarat.
The bypoll results highlighted Congress’ weakening grip in the state. In Visavadar, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Gopal Italia won by a margin of 17,554 votes, defeating BJP’s Kirit Patel. Italia, the former Gujarat AAP president, secured a strong victory, showcasing AAP’s growing influence in the state. Meanwhile, in Kadi, BJP’s Rajendra Chavda defeated Congress candidate and former MLA Ramesh Chavda with a massive margin of 39,452 votes. The Kadi seat, reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates, recorded a clear BJP dominance as Chavda secured 99,742 votes compared to Ramesh Chavda’s 60,290.
The twin defeats are a clear indication of Congress’ declining presence in Gujarat, a state where it has struggled to regain relevance since the rise of BJP in the early 2000s. While the party had hoped to regain ground with Gohil’s leadership and strategic planning, the results suggest that much deeper restructuring and grassroots work are needed. The inability to mount a credible challenge, even in traditionally competitive seats, points to a systemic organizational failure.
On the other hand, the Aam Aadmi Party's performance in Visavadar signals its intent to fill the opposition vacuum in Gujarat. Gopal Italia's win is a morale booster for AAP, especially after the party’s underwhelming show in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. For BJP, the bypolls reaffirm its strong base in Gujarat and its ability to mobilize voters effectively, even between major elections.
As Gujarat prepares for the next round of assembly elections, the Congress faces a critical juncture. With Gohil stepping down, the party will now need fresh leadership, clear strategy, and committed grassroots work to counter the dual challenge posed by BJP’s dominance and AAP’s emergence. Whether this resignation will spark a revival or further decline remains to be seen.
